Maura Satchell

When I paint, I escape. There are no boundaries or hard and fast rules to the images and worlds I create, and I often feel an unseen presence guiding me as I work. When I paint, I choose to express the beauty and light in this planet of ours. I try to uplift and transport my audience to a pleasant frame of mind and a natural world filled with wonder and miracles.

After retiring following years behind a camera lens and computer monitor, I began to paint in earnest. I derive satisfaction in breaking rules, pushing envelopes, experimenting, and using commonplace materials, textures, and applications in unconventional ways.  Sometimes it’s an abysmal failure (but one I learn from). Other times, it works surprisingly well.

I appreciate that less is more in so many ways when it comes to making art and find some of my most interesting work is minimalist in style – in terms of color, composition or style.  Still, I’m not afraid to mix media and have supplies of all types on hand to play around with.  And speaking of play, my toughest but most valuable lesson so far has been to relinquish control and see where the paint takes me, and I do so with great pleasure.
