So in addition to painting… I write

Empty Sky novel front cover
Cover for the fictional novel “Empty Sky” scheduled for release in late July, 2014. The cover image uses one of my paintings.

I’ve been writing all my life.  My first poem, about bears, was at age five and all through childhood, teen years, and in adulthood, I’ve written poems to process my feelings.  I later delved into stories and fiction.  In college, I’d write term papers for others and loved taking on such assignments of my own.  I majored in Mass Comm and worked as a reporter covering local, national and even international stories at times.  I loved being in the thick of it, but didn’t appreciate the paycheck and eventually sold my soul to corporate America after a time, lured by the security and extra zero’s in one’s paycheck.

In 2004, I co-wrote a screenplay “Empty Sky” with a fine Nashvillian named Paul Lopes.  We tried, unsuccessfully to market it and with Paul’s full approval, I took the story and crafted a novel out of it.  The 3oo-plus page fictional work sat gathering dust until late last year when Four Pillars Media Group came knocking.

We’re in the final stages of bringing this book to press and I am so excited!  It’s like emerging from a long slumber to actually hold the paperback proof copy in my hands, finally!  It is in post-editing now and is slated for release in July!  In case you are wondering what it’s about, here’s the synopsis from the back of the book:

“Grammy winning producer Matt Buckley has an enviable career in Nashville and all the material trappings success can buy. But his personal life is a mess and the death of his father sends him into self-destructive freefall. A chance meeting with a stranger who’s just lost his own son inspires Matt to get his act together.

After taking some positive steps forward, Matt meets and falls for April, a struggling musician and single mother of two. Emotionally damaged from a troubled past of her own, April is understandably reluctant, given Matt’s history and reputation. But with courage, love and humor, the two manage to work through their personal baggage and trust issues toward a life together and a fairy tale ending… or one would think.”

In case the cover looks familiar, it incorporates one of my own paintings!  I wasn’t sure, but now that I’ve held it in my hands, yeah, I think it works!  More importantly, in testing it out on others, they like it too!

Artwork for Dolly!

<a href='http://fineartamerica.com/featured/first-blush-of-spring-maura-satchell.html' size='20'><img src='http://fineartamerica.com/displayartwork.html?id=11339986&width=250&height=198' alt='Art Prints' title='Art Prints' style='border: none;'></a>
“First Blush of Spring” was painted for a fundraiser for a colleague/friend with Breast Cancer. I choose to paint this because it’s use of the color pink for breast cancer, and wanted to convey life and hope and future joy.

Dolly, a friend is undergoing chemotherapy in her courageous battle against breast cancer.  Though she has a great job and healthcare coverage, the costs are exhorbitant. So… I’m donating this canvas acrylic painting to a raffle fundraiser to help cover her costs.  It is to be the premier raffle item and I’m flattered.  Fingers crossed it nets a decent amount for Dolly tomorrow! In addition to the raffle, they’re holding a Zumbathon in which I’m taking part.  I haven’t done this in years, but it’ll be great fun and I’m quite excited, though doubtful that I’ll be able to make the full 150 minutes!

PS: If you like this image, copies and cards can be purchased through Fine Art America.

Twitter Art Exhibit 2014 – Live and in person!

Very glad I was able to get over to Orlando for this wonderful cultural and humanitarian event. David Sandum founded this 4 years ago and there were 600+ works of art donated to the Orlando 2014 ‪#‎TwitterArtExhibit‬ curated byRobin Maria Pedrero which raised funds for the The Center for Contemporary Dance special needs program . Enough words, now for the pictures:

Plant City’s Strawberry Festival!

We moved into our lovely home in Plant City  a year ago this week and missed last year’s “world famous” Strawberry Festival that Plant City is known for!  So this year, not only did we make it to go, but I even scrambled and submitted three paintings.  They’re shown below.  Sadly, non made it into ribbon contention, but it was a pleasure to participate all the same.

Busy times

It’s been hectic the past few weeks and I expect it to get more hectic still moving into the Christmas season. I’ve had little time to paint but did manage to get a few more small flamingos painted.

Here are a few of the ones I did recently:

Walsh Family Crest

Image
Walsh Family Crest painting by Maura Satchell

So a couple of years ago I painted our family crest for one of my brothers for Christmas. Thanks to a great photo, it’s available as notecards, prints and even acrylic and metallic prints through the online gallery I work with, FineArtAmerica.Com .  My maiden name is Walsh, my dad wore a gold ring with the Pierced Swan crest and it was always a source of mystery and pride for me.

Cut to 30 years later and my first visit to Wales.  My husband is from England and his mum, from Barmouth, Wales. We were there for an uncle’s funeral and had a little time to drive and tour the countryside which, for me, had a deep primordial draw that I couldn’t explain.  Until I entered the gift shot where, lo and behold, I spied a keyring with the Walsh crest on it.

I know the Walsh name is huge in Ireland, the fourth most common name in all of that country. But according to Wikipedia, it evolved as the name for foreigners from Wales and Britain.

So, if there are any Walshes out there in search of prints, notecards, canvas copies, here’s one option for you:  http://fineartamerica.com/featured/walsh-family-crest-maura-satchell.html

So, yeah, about those flamingos

I mentioned a couple of posts ago that I was about to go on a Flamingo – painting binge.  You know, those gorgeous, brilliant salmon , pink , red , white colors of the fun iconic Florida bird.  The idea came to me because the guest bedroom in our new (old but new to us) home is painted a bright, beachy aqua, so what better to set off the wall color than these fun birds?

Here, I present you a few finished products.  I hope our guests enjoy them and I hope you do to.  I sure had fun painting them!  They’re acrylic paintings, glazed to preserve a luminous glow.

In need of kitchen art, so what do I do?

As the title suggests, we’re in our new home and oh wow! We needed art for the walls! So what do I do? Of course, I paint!

In all honesty, I did the Market Basket trio of paintings themed around the family farm, featuring an ear of corn, watermelon, and a ripe juicy tomato, a couple of weeks ago, inspired by a ride out in the country. They’re on masonite panels rather than canvas. The Rooster and Hot Salsa were strategically planned to grace a couple of prominent blank kitchen walls in our expansive new home. We’re pretty jazzed at how they came out — the paintings and the walls, that is.

SHAMELESS PLUG MOMENT: If you have some kitchen or walls that need gracing, or are in search of a housewarming gift for a friend with a homey, folksy, country style decor, you can always visit my fun Home at the Farm gallery to buy prints or canvases at Fine Art America. There, if you find an image you like, you can order it in several formats, from a single greeting card to your own canvas print. A few originals are even listed there, too.

Not three, but FOUR months later…

and I’m finally getting back into my painting.  With a full time job in social media for a major central FL company, my days are busy and free time is a luxury at this point.  The house is settled in, more or less; We’re in a groove in terms of pool, lawn and home upkeep; We’ve even got a well-stocked freezer, filled with Grouper, Tuna and Snapper thanks to my son who visited and had a successful fishing trip on the gulf side.  So, there’s little else to do but paint!

And it’s hit me: it’s time to try Flamingoes!  I can see them now, all aqua backgrounds, cheery red/salmon/pink/crimson and white bodies with graceful long necks and impossibly skinny legs and balls for knees!  How fun!  I was so motivated I already slapped the backgrounds on about five canvases of varying sizes.  The plan is, to paint and hang these (hopefully) adorable works throughout this, our “Florida” guest room.

The room was a big renovation project we tackled last month.  Long story short, the homeowner’s son was a heavy smoker and preferred dark drab colors.  Not us, that’s for sure, and after painting, carpet cleaning and furniture reworking, we love the end result.

Transformed from drab dark blue to this, we hope our guest bedroom is inviting and welcoming.

So, stay tuned for a few froliking and fun Flamingoes!

Coming home

Our new home
Our new home

Here I sit on the last night before we close on the purchase of our lovely new home in a pleasant and serene community in Central Florida.  It’s been a long journey, both figuratively and metaphorically speaking.  I left our comfortable Tennessee home last June to take a great job in Florida.  The dog and I started with an air mattress and folding table in a tiny, hot second floor apartment with a kitchen smaller than the size of our former master bathroom!  Hubby extraordinaire (David) joined us after sprucing up and selling the house in September when 90% of our belongings were placed in storage.  The remaining items and the three of us were crammed into that small space with little light or room to breathe.

After getting most everything packed up and ready for the move for the second time in less than a year, here I sit tonight, processing this journey. I am so filled with emotion knowing it’s about to reach its end. Or start, as it were.  It will mean a chance to settle into a home we love in an area that abounds in glorious flora and fauna. And it will mean a chance to unpack all the art supplies and materials and books and inspirational mementos I have missed for so.very.long.

My soul is tingling with anticipation and excitement as if ready to meet a new lover for a secret tryst. But this is real and is out in the light of day. It is due, in some part, to those sacrifices we made these past nine months. And it is due to my starting at the bottom again, two years ago taking a job in retail with meager pay hoping it might just lead to something more fulfilling, which, thankfully it did!

After the signing of countless documents and the tiresome humping of boxes and driving back and forth, will come the joy and pleasure.  First, the unpacking of boxes filled with items nearly forgotten for the better part of a year.  Then, the digging in and getting back to that which I love more than nearly everything else on earth (except my kids, husband and hound): making art.

If all goes well, you may not hear from me for another three months!

Signing off,

Maura
